Aquatherm® fabric has been developed to enable wearers to remain warm and dry for sport or leisure, in a whole range of conditions. It is a lightweight fabric that offers great freedom of movement, far more so than with traditional, bulkier neoprene and woven garments.
It is essential that the garment is working with the athlete, unlike earlier neoprene fabrics, where the athlete is more often working against the garment. Aquatherm is less than a millimetre thick and remains stable, flexible, strong and waterproof when fully flexed. Unlike neoprene, it has the added advantage of being watershedding and fast drying, so less temperature is lost from the wet outer shell through evaporation.
I was obsessed with my surfer's ear. I tried several remedies (ear caps of various sort, including bespoke ones) until Guido at Tuilik ' s (Milan) suggested me to try this fantastic piece of kit !
As I wore it for the first time, I could rediscover the pleasure of practising rolling and bracing, as without it, water enters my ears and my aches start again.
Not so good for very cold water in the standard aquatherm.
I've been using one of these hoods for years as a sea kayaker, they last really well and work really well. This and the fleece lined version are my go to for cold water play or practice, if its nasty winter weather then I will wear one all day happily. They are simple, robust, warm and allow you to look around easily and unlike a hood they don't get affected by strong winds at all. They pack down small as an emergency garment and I tend to carry one whenever its chilly. The only downside I find is that if you are paddling with a group these make it harder to hear as they cover your ears so well.
Overall a great piece of clothing for the sea or river.
