Celebrating Tradition and Innovation: The 2025 Qajaq Hong Kong Championships & Barbecue Festival

On December 6th, 2025, the rhythmic splash of paddles and the laughter of friends echoed across the waters of Sai Kung, as Qajaq Hong Kong hosted its annual Qajaq Championships and Barbecue Festival. This vibrant gathering brought together tradition, competition, and community spirit, offering a rare opportunity to experience Greenland sea kayaking and Greenland rolling in the heart of Hong Kong.

In a city better known for its skyline than its paddling heritage, the event created space to reconnect with the ancient and highly refined art of Greenland-style kayaking, a discipline rooted in efficiency, balance, and harmony with the sea.

Growing the Greenland Sea Kayaking Community in Hong Kong

Founded in 2021, Qajaq Hong Kong has grown from a small online forum into a thriving community of more than 400 members, united by a shared passion for Greenland paddles, traditional kayaking techniques, and rolling skills. The 2025 festival marked another important milestone, showcasing how Greenland sea kayaking continues to gain momentum across Asia.

More than just a competition, the event celebrated the culture behind the craft. The day featured short sprint races, Greenland rolling competitions, onshore exhibitions, and an evening barbecue that allowed paddlers to connect, learn, and share stories.

A Landmark Moment: Greenland Paddle Sprint Racing

A historic highlight of this year’s championships was the debut of a Greenland paddle sprint race, a first for Hong Kong and possibly for Asia. Competitors raced using traditional Greenland paddles, rather than Euro or wing blades, demonstrating the surprising speed and efficiency of this centuries-old design.

Watching the long, slender blades slice cleanly through the water was both a tribute to tradition and a reminder that innovation often comes from rediscovering proven techniques. For many spectators, it was a revelation of what Greenland sea kayaking truly offers.

Greenland Rolling and the Power of the Avataq

The Greenland rolling competition was another major highlight, combining skill, precision, and plenty of good-natured humor. This year, the event was proudly supported by Reed Chillcheater, our major sponsor.

Reed supplied their renowned Aquatherm spray decks, which quickly became the talk of the rolling events. Participants praised their watertight seal, flexibility, and reliability, with many wondering why such a high-performance spray deck had not yet become standard equipment among Hong Kong sea kayakers.

Equally important were the Avataq hunting floats, also provided by Reed. Traditionally used by Greenland hunters, the Avataq is an essential tool in Greenland rolling, offering powerful buoyancy when attached to the paddle. For many competitors, the Avataq proved both helpful and humbling, its impressive lift caught several paddlers by surprise, leading to unexpected capsizes and plenty of laughter from shore.

These moments perfectly captured the spirit of Greenland rolling: playful, challenging, and deeply connected to tradition.

Community, Culture, and Shared Stories

As the sun set and the barbecue fires were lit, paddlers gathered under the winter stars to exchange stories of near-perfect rolls, dramatic recoveries, and lessons learned. Friendships were strengthened, new connections formed, and the sense of community was as buoyant as the Avataqs themselves.

This blend of sea kayaking skills, cultural heritage, and social connection is what makes Greenland-style paddling so special.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Greenland Kayaking in Asia

Qajaq Hong Kong remains committed to growing awareness and participation in Greenland sea kayaking and Greenland rolling throughout the region. By sharing knowledge, celebrating traditional equipment like Greenland paddles and Avataqs, and fostering an inclusive community, we hope to inspire more paddlers to explore this timeless craft.

Greenland kayaking is more than a technique, it is a philosophy of movement, resilience, and joy on the water. And as the 2025 Championships showed, its future in Hong Kong and Asia has never looked brighter.
