What Are ‘Forever Chemicals’ and Why Should You Care?
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often referred to as Forever Chemicals, first developed in the 1950s. There water and stain-resistant properties led to widespread use in outdoor clothing, including dry suits, dry tops, and dry trousers for kayaking and paddle sports.
Unfortunately, PFAS do not break down in nature. These chemicals are now found in 99% of human bloodstreams, and studies have linked them to serious health issues including cancer, liver damage, and high cholesterol. In wildlife, they disrupt immune systems and neurological function, impacting species from otters to polar bears.
As the dangers of PFAS in kayaking gear have become more widely known, paddlers and manufacturers alike are rethinking the materials used in kayaking equipment.
