Rediscovering Tradition Greenland Paddling with Reed Chillcheater

Rediscovering Tradition Greenland Paddling with Reed Chillcheater

We are excited to share a video from the coastal waters of the North East, where a vibrant community of paddlers is keeping the ancient tradition of Greenland paddling alive whilst promoting sea kayaking opportunities in the local area. This immersive Greenland paddling course showcases centuries-old techniques that connect paddlers with both the kayak and the Greenland paddle, offering a unique blend of heritage and adventure.Set against the dynamic backdrop of the North Sea, this course provides a hands-on experience where paddlers can learn the elegant strokes and efficient techniques that have been passed down through generations. Our latest video beautifully captures this spirit, bringing to life how Greenland paddling tradition seamlessly meets the thrill of modern sea kayaking.

The Art of Greenland Paddling

Unlike modern kayak paddles, the Greenland paddle features a slender, elongated design, typically measuring 2.5–3.5 inches (9cms) at the blade tip. This unique shape promotes a lighter grip and a more relaxed stroke, reducing strain on the forearms and shoulders. The traditional forward paddling technique emphasizes torso rotation and a precise "push" approach with the exposed blade, fostering better ergonomics and efficiency on the water. Efficient, confident, forward paddling techniques, coupled with strong support strokes and bracing can prevent the need to ‘roll in anger’!! Owning a number of bomb proof rolls in any sea state is the cherry on the kayakers cake.
