Adventure happens, they say, when the outcome is uncertain

It’s with this in mind that I’ve committed to tackling what, for me, is a pretty sizeable and definitely uncertain challenge:  sea kayaking around mainland Britain, all being well, in 2026. Not only that, I’m choosing to tackle the 2500 miles, solo and unsupported. I’m not daft, so I’ll readily accept the spontaneous offers of help from strangers if that comes in the form of a meal, a bed, or shower, or all three! Friends and family will be there too as some points, I guess, probably to tell me to stop blubbing and get on with it.

Why now?

My inspiration comes from my friend Kev, diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer in 2019. He retired early and cycled around Britain, proving that dreams should not be delayed. Thanks to new treatments, he is still riding and still inspiring, and I realised I needed to start saying yes to my own ambitions.

Could I paddle around Britain? Perhaps, I thought, I could paddle around Britain!  Is it feasible?  It is a huge challenge, but the coastline is beautiful, and as a Lowestoft lad, beginning from home and travelling clockwise feels right.

Am I ready?

Using my own balanced scorecard:

  • Experience: Decades of paddling in slalom, surf, marathon, sprint, open canoe, plus sea kayaking from my teens and again in recent years. Score 8 out of 10
  • Motivation: I have done many short adventures, but never a long expedition over many weeks. This is my personal rite of passage into older years and a chance to raise money for charities. Score 8 out of 10
  • Knowledge: Strong navigation skills through Mountain Leader, Yachtmaster theory, VHF license, first aid training, and years of teaching camp craft. Score 8 out of 10
  • Equipment: I have invested in a Kirton C Trek 18 and reliable paddle gear. Reed Chillcheater kayaking clothing has become essential for comfort and safety in UK waters. Score 9 out of 10
  • Time and Support: Early retirement gives me the freedom to commit to this journey, with full support from my wife and family. Score 9 out of 10
  • Resources: No income while I am away, but I am as prepared as I can be. Score 8 out of 10
  • Physical fitness: In my late fifties and recovering more slowly than before, but I have a lifelong background in training and racing, and expert coaching to lean on. Score 6 out of 10
  • Mental resilience: The biggest unknown. I have never needed to be this self reliant for so long. Score 5 out of 10

Conclusion - I can draw on experience and knowledge, I’m in control of equipment and clothing, I have time and support.   The question marks are physical and mental.   Therein lies the uncertainty… and the challenge!

What comes next?

With a pencilled-in departure of spring 2026, I have four to five (wintery) months to prepare.   My preparations will cover the following areas:

  • Philosophy - Refining my approach, limits, goals, and targets (What do I want to get out of this trip other than a circumnavigation?
  • Planning and Logistics - Information gathering, documentation, and resources.  Speaking with others who have completed this or similar trips.
  • Anchor Protocols - developing “anchor” communication systems ie Adam Williams will be my “anchor” supported by other friends.  He will provide timely information and support from a distance when I need it!
  • Fundraising - Developing a partnership with my chosen charities.
  • Clothing, kit, and equipment - Testing and refining clothing, kit, and Reed Chillcheater paddle gear
  • Safety - Practicing self-rescue techniques and communication systems.
  • Partnerships - working with suppliers, sponsors, voluntary agencies, and support charities.  Eg Coastwatch
  • Training navigation techniques (digital and manual)
  • Reliability and Resilience - Building stamina and strength and real-world testing through mini-expeditions.
  • Developing a nutrition strategy and potentially adapting to it before departure.
  • Publicity - mastering (!!!) social media, blogging, video editing, and hashtags (whatever they are!)

Lots to do, and I’ll try to keep you informed through this blog and my social media channels:
